Koala Conservation Regulation
The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) was uplisted from vulnerable in Southeast Queensland to endangered across its range under state and Commonwealth legislation in 2022.
On 7 February 2020, the Nature Conservation and Other Legislation (Koala Protection) Amendment Regulation 2020 took effect.
The development regulations introduced in 2020 protect important areas in which koalas live in Southeast Queensland (SEQ) by:
- prohibiting the clearing of koala habitat in koala priority areas
- regulating the clearing of koala habitat in koala habitat areas via development approvals.
